Intro

Creo que el arte es mezcla de tráfico de experienciasy último refugio de la magia con una cierta otra cosa que ni siquiera intento definir. Desde ese lugar (al que podría llamar saber elemental) genero acciones artísticas que dejan huellas. Así como no puedo evitar cuestionar la división cuerpo / espíritu (?), también creo que mi reptar de disciplina en disciplina (de la escultura al spokenword pasando por la acción, el video y la instalación) es mi manera de dinamitar la división que se trata de imponer entre ellas, inexplicable modo de adiestramiento. Creo que el mismo movimiento se da entre los materiales que elijo para trabajar: del plástico al hueso, en el inter-medio, la carne y el fuego y luego, tejer las excrecencias vegetales. Más allá de la muestra específica del mismo nombre, la suspensión aparece hoy como algo más general en mi estar siendo artista (y en mi vida, claro) porque alude justamente a lo que es/está simultáneamente vivo y muerto, arriba y abajo, pulcro y hediento, humano, animal y divino y que replantea la oposición de estas categorías. Y esto es para mí motor: la existencia de una subversión sistemática de mí mismo, un cierto carácter viral del hacer, una búsqueda justiciera que aúlla: mi máscara es mi rostro.

The Visitor - Multimedia Exhibit may 17 / Jun 14 New London USA


Como parte de la residencia artística a la que fui invitado del 12 de abril al 19 de junio de 2014 por , desarrolle diversas actividades y me vi envuelto de modo muy profundo en la vida de la ciudad. Una de ellas fue la realización de una muestra multimedia desarrollada en la sala de exposiciones de Expressiones y también en el sótano del S XVIII para el cual desarrolle especialmente una video instalación.

Expresiones se enorgullece de presentar “The Visitor”, una exposición multimedia creada por Juan Miceli, nuestro actual artista en residencia, proveniente de Buenos Aires, Argentina. La muestra ocupara el espacio regular de la galeria, pero ademas contara con una videoinstalacion especialmente realizada por el artista en el sótano del edificio del siglo donde ubicara su taller de dibujo, proyectara el video The Visitor con música original de Juan Cruz Masotta -artista argentino que reside en New York- que tocara en vivo en la inauguración.

Expressiones is proud to present “The Visitor,” a multimedia exhibition created by Juan Miceli, our current Artist in Residence from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Juan is a multimedia artist who is willing to take risks using experimental techniques and technologies to find new ways of expression. His work explores his inner as well as collective trepidations. He works with found objects creating unusual installations and at times uses his own body as part of an installation or performance. Miceli doesn’t stop there, his practices grow more complex but finally return us to the timeless language: Line. His drawings are very personal and have all been done in New London during his time here. They explore and distinguish the relationship between myth and reality. They relate one to each other creating a sound that crosses his entire exhibit. The viewer can visualize his work made in different medias just as one piece constantly moving and changing. 

This Exhibit is fulfilling Expressiones mentoring work and goals to promote the understanding and richness of the Hispanic Culture.

ARTIST STATEMENT. 
“ I am an audio-visual artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina but ever since I arrived in New London I call myself The Visitor, which means I am truly and utterly here but not completely. And I call myself like this because I am the one that resides, that is nestling inside, the one that infiltrates in a good way and let myself be so by landscape and facts and people. I am as this river I see every morning from my window that filters into the land.
I firmly believe we all are like this river that is here yet always flowing and changing and leaving and staying in perfect unison. That reminds me of a lot of (and even connects me with) a lot of other rivers, the ones of my country which have this doubleness in their own nature: the capacity and will of being simultaneously in and out, half land and half ocean.
As a Latin American artist I believe this continent has lots of halfbreed nature: the capacity and will of being conqueror and defeated, immigrant and emigrant, civilized and wild at the same time. This is something that really compels me, I have the urge to ask questions: what is space itself? how does the land rule both art and life -which are the same for me in fact- and last but not least what is the nature of the double/s. I tend to think about it as a two faced entity but each being true. 


From that stand I install, I write, I draw, I make videos as a way of posturing there is no way of separate things if you are an artist, but to unite, to find spaces of communion. Then I insist on exploring the boundaries of Latin-American art as the quintessence of whatever we call half-breed but as a fortress: the breeding of the mud, the thunder, the stone and something that is moving under water and I invoke it with this exhibition”.
